Halloween has ancient Celtic roots, when people celebrated the festival of Samhain (it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth on this day). They would light bonfires and wear costumes to ward off ghosts. 

By 43 A.D., the majority of Celtic territory was conquered by the Romans, therefore two festivals of Roman origin (Feralia and Pomona) were combined with the traditional Celtic celebration of Samhain.

By the 9th century the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands, and the evening before known as All Hallows Eve, was later renamed to Halloween. Over the years, Halloween evolved into trick-or-treating, costumes, sweet treats and carving jack-o-lanterns activities celebrated all around the world.

Even though Halloween was not celebrated in colonial New England because of the rigid Protestant belief systems, flooded with new immigrants during the second half of the nineteenth century, American Indinans’ beliefs and customs soon meshed with the different European ethnic groups’ ones, and a new American version of Halloween - that we celebrate today began to emerge.
